PYRITE

Known since ancient times, Pyrite takes its name from the Greek word pyr, meaning “fire,” referring to its ability to produce sparks when struck against metal or stone. Because of its metallic gold-like appearance, Pyrite became widely known as “Fool’s Gold,” though it may occasionally contain trace amounts of real gold.

Pyrite was used by ancient Greek and Roman civilizations in jewellery and ornamental objects, and polished forms were also used by Indigenous cultures in the Americas for ceremonial and decorative purposes. Its reflective surface and durability made it useful both practically
and symbolically.
